But the year she first watched and fell in love with the Eurovision Song Contest? 1988 :o

I just stumbled on the OGAE Facebook thread (I rarely do FB but my phone is dead so using it for Messenger) and the responses there are hilarious.

I'm thinking CELINE? AM I being too hopeful? :D
:D!

Haven’t they pretty much said it will be someone unknown? Not that I’d want to stop the traditional hysterical guessing of course :D

I don't really know much about them in terms of performance - are they decent live? I remember they said the priority when picking our act is great live vocals, which I'm not sure describes Bananarama :D

They are AMAZING fun live and definitely can hold a tune, but most of the time they've had a few gins and it can get a bit shambolic (often a stray bra strap being done up mid-song, lots of half arsed handography...). An absolute recommendation for a festival appearance or a proper Nana live show, but DEFINITELY keep them as far away from Eurovision as possible :D

Caveat: I wouldn't mind a Nana written entry in the slightest!

Further Obvious Caveat: Not that it's them in a MILLION YEARS!

Calum Scott (evil gay who bored up Robyn’s Dancing on my Own and had a much bigger hit with it) has also been floated, and that seems more realistic.

Born in 1988, for what it’s worth.

He’s a bore but ‘Roots’ from last year low-key slapped, and I assume he has decent stage presence as he performs a lot. He would actually be a very good choice.

I’d say he is someone that would do it, though I just checked his Spotify and he has three songs over one BILLION, so maybe he wouldn’t need to. I didn’t realise he was that successful.

To the surprise of all, the account has now denied it's Bananarama :o

I don't think I'm quite ready for it to be Calum Scott. We haven't exhausted all other options yet.

I thought that had come from someone registering a fake BBC Eurovision account on Bluesky?

I'd be prepared to say the "streets" may be right, purely from this tweet alone, from an account that reliably posts "reality TV" information that has clearly been sent to them to post by PR teams.

It would at least indicate SOMETHING is coming soon.

Tomorrow wouldn't be too surprising. I'm assuming that the BBC does generally realise that it's one of their crown jewels these days and is still worth a token amount of effort in terms of organisation, compared to the pre-2022 state of affairs.

I mean, even with the boycott it still ended up having really obviously solid ratings last year in the end.

That hasn’t meant early announcements previously though, has it? Maybe I’m wrong…

Pre-2022, no, but I feel like something did reset in terms of their approach post-Embers where it feels plausible they may now be willing to give it decent resource/consideration as standard, even if they're still usually clueless/not actually capable of putting together the package that might actually deliver a good result.

Anyway. I'm really crossing my fingers for a consolidation left hand result this year, to ensure the gains/investment of the last few years don't end up in the firing line as not worth the candle. Perfectly happy to have something that doesn't please *us*, but which locks down a respectable 10th place or whatever, if it banks the BBC taking Eurovision seriously/improved perceptions of the contest for the long term.

Announcement dates:

Olly Alexander - 16 December
Mae Muller - 9 March
Sam Ryder - 10 March
James Newman (2020) - 26 Feb

So Olly was unusually early, probably because he was locked in very quickly.

In retrospect, I half wonder if someone in the BBC team who could think a step ahead didn't realise it might be worth locking in Olly publicly so early, because he might get cold feet once he thought about it and potentially realised what was waiting for him...
