Gen Z’s insistence that characters in media also have to live up to their moral standards drives me fucking insane.

The film/shows a critique of the early 00s fashion industry, this is how people spoke back then!
 
I see Disney are having a bash at The Greatest Showman, and it'll be getting a world premiere at the Hippodrome here next year - just like Mary Poppins did back whenever it was.

The film was very much a 6 or a 7 for me so I don't feel too much appetite for it, but I'm sure the local hype will be enough to get me over the line for it when tickets go on sale.

Calm down Sarah Vine, it's not the fact the line is still used at all, it's the fact they only use it when the understudy is on (:D)
 
BBC’s Big Night of Musicals not quite as good as previous years (so far)

It’s mostly showcasing tours I don’t want see or shit I’ve seen but didn’t like, so at least that’ll save some money this year. Calamity Jane looks terrible.

The Mean Girls performance was great though, and of course Titanique at least didn’t give too much away. Marisha Wallace on now may save the show.
 
She sounded great, but just seemed like copying Liza. The thing is that Sally isn’t really supposed to be a great performer.
 
Yes when I saw cabaret it was Amy Lennox performing and what was so incredible about the performance of ‘Life is a Cabaret’ is how unhinged and off-key it was where it needed to be. Not everyone can do that!
 
It sounded so desperate and hopeless in her interpretation and I fear the stunt high profile castings miss this crucial nuance.
 
I’ve not seen any other performance but very happy that’s the one I saw, and I got insanely cheap tickets because it was still a bit COVIDY back then (I think £60 for front row balcony) I took my Mother who’d only ever seen the film and she was flawed by it!
 
Burlesque is opening at The Savoy (RIP Mean Girls). Is Xtina's diary clear?
 
Quite a short run as it'll be making way for Paddington later in the year. It'll probably move?

Heard good things about it but also heard there's been conflict behind the scenes and the new production might be different to the one that's been elsewhere in recent years

I saw it in January. One of the people I went with was desperate for the loo and unknowingly got up 2 minutes before the interval. He missed the murder :D

The Mousetrap was part of my London theatre awakening when I started to have disposable income, and it very nearly put me off from seeing anything else :D. Hokey old shit, but I enjoyed the twist and it's more like going to The Tower of London or Madame Tussauds, as it has that added London tourist mainstay element.

If you like The Mousetrap I recommend the 'site specific' Witness for the Prosecution at the County Hall, which I saw around the same time and thought was MARVELLOUS
 
Broadway show report:

Death Becomes Her - fantastic, hilarious, everyone here would love it 100% guaranteed
Maybe Happy Ending - lovely and beautifully staged. Bit twee.
Boop! - mixed bag, some great numbers and it’s fun in parts but hard to find too much enthusiasm for it
Oh, Mary! - funny but I didn’t love Tituss Burgess in the role (think he was sick) and sat there wishing I was watching Cole
John Proctor Is The Villain - excellent play with a fantastic young cast, recommended, especially if you like LORDE
SMASH - a mess but the highs (most of the songs) are stratospheric. Would watch it 100 more times for those numbers, not least the STEAM ROOM ONE :horny:

I'm wondering if I might do a Saturday matinee. I could drop Mr L off at Voyage (looking at a map it's only a short walk from Abba Arena?) for a matinee and head there.
 
Do you all usually listen to cast recordings before seeing shows?

I decided not to for Maybe Happy Ending, and now that I've been RINSING the album since seeing it, I kind of wish I knew the music going in. I'd love to hear it all again with a pre-existing familiarity with it.

Hitting The Road Parts 1 2 & 3 all BANGERS btw
 
I only really did that with Hamilton, and that hugely helped because it’s so wordy. I did listen to Six first too, but the show was so much better than just the songs.

Right, run it by some of the girls from work and they’re up for a Lovestuck group outing in the summer. Some of them live far out and would never go in to the West End in the week, but next to the station right after work is thankfully an attractive offer :)

I tend to, particularly for musicals which are lyrically dense.
 
A lot of the time I find musical theatre numbers off-putting out of context, but then love them once I've seen the show, so I tend to avoid pre-listening.
