Lady Gaga - Artpop

Well that's just it, Pink isn't relevant. Even Christina is more important.

Sorry, P!nk is an A-lister too if you think of the sales and popularity. I just don't consider her to be anything groundbreaking or that creative. She's good, she's great, she has great stage presence but, as I'm expressing my personal opinion only, she's nothing extraordinary.

Another thing about Applause is that I REALLY do rate the video as well, even though I think Gaga subsequently came out to say she hated it.

The preceding QoL moment where she replied to a query about how long the video would be with "the length of the FUCKING song" lives on in my memory.

In terms of artists who could reasonably expect to shove everyone out of the way and get to #1 (or top three) with a proper pop release in the next week, I'd say it's probably the following:

- Beyoncé
- Katy Perry
- Miley Cyrus
- Kanye (if he did a pop track)
- Taylor Swift
- P!nk?
- Adele
- Rihanna

I'd say only Kanye has similar creativity to Gaga, but then she has kind of made a conscious choice to prioritise it over mass appeal

Nicki Minaj, perhaps?

For that list, while they are pushing their luck, One Direction would be on that list, I reckon. In fact they've done just THAT a few weeks ago

Justin - bigger than most of the divas - is a glaring omission. It started out as Britney/Xtina/JT with Pink behind them in the frame as the closest new generation millennial replacements to the big icons of the 80s - Madge/MJ/Whitney (Prince is inimitable in his genius) before legend in the making Beyonce steamrollered over everyone.

Justin and Bee are about the only ones who could drop surprise albums and get 1 million plus sales.

Love the video and the single cover, that was the best thing about the project. I shall have to listen again, I was impressed by how far she'd pushed the music but it's exhausting to listen to in one sitting, felt the same about BTW, really.

She said her former management didn't give them enough time to work on it and she would have loved to have one more week for the production or something along those lines.
It was part of her official statement about the DWUW video cancellation.

still on this. i know it's pretty evenly split between crap and grandeur but i feel the highs make it all worth it.

there's a good song even in most of the ones i've rated low, there's just hidden beneath far too busy and abrasive production that doesn't pay off and dreadul lyrics like "garden panty" or "don't you know my ass is famous". could've been an amazing ep.

A scaled down 10/11 track album is definitely worth a 9 or a 10 but there's too many potholes on the route. A bit like Madonna's 'Rebel Heart' in that sense.

This album still floors me every time, for all the right (and wrong) reasons:

10 Aura - I mean, where to begin? I suppose this is the only song batshit enough to open this utterly insane tour-de-force of an album. Many times I have fantasised about donning a burqa in order to raped by a gaggle of muscular Muslim migrants while clinging to dinghy crossing the Med but never more than when I envelope myself in this max track.
11 Venus - possibly the greatest Gaga song of all time. Hooks for days. Just when you think you can't take any more chorus, here's another! Those ABBA teas are intergalatically sublime.
10 G.U.Y. - The sequel to Frankie Goes To Hollywood's Relax, this bottom's up anthem packs more punch than a fist in the hole
08 Sexxx Dreams - not as voracious as G.U.Y. or as filthy as Heavy Metal Lover, but cute for a taste and a swallow
10 Jewels N Drugs - as someone who has always gagged over UrbanGa this ratchet drug-addled bop has always left me on a high
05 Manicure - horrible vocal but a good song lurking somewhere under the cuticle
11 Do What U Want - the other greatest Gags song of all time. Every time I listen to it I want my back broken a dom black top.
10 Artpop - sublime. Stripped down on the piano it works just as well. Some of her finest songwriting.
05 Swine - on the one hand, the worst thing she's ever done; on the other, there's a great little song buried under all that vomit-indusing 2012 production
05 Donatella - like a gay Tumblr blog doing a really bad Snatch Game impression to music
10 Fashion - another reductive Gags homage that works much better than it should
07 Mary Jane Holland - the sound of the start of a comedown
05 Dope - I Wanna Be With You was better
10 Gypsy - amazing
11 Applause - my most played song of all time. :disco:

A lot of her "acoustic" performances convinced me of the quality of songwriting on this album. This is my favourite Gags performance of all-time.

I love a good old gay hyperbole. Though when it comes to Gaga everything is gay and hyperbolic.

On The Muppets' tip, this remains SENSATIONAL.

Venus was and still is utterly bonkers.

I think once you accept that Gaga isn't the new Madonna (and is actually far more talented, creative and interesting), and isn't going to launch a thousand Bad Romances, you can really start to appreciate the music a lot more. So much of BTW and Artpop was tarnished by my frustration with her for not being as polished and commercial and all-conquering as she had been during the Monster era. But, really, she's much better for it. I can't wait to hear what she comes up with next.

She killed it with these as well for me:

And these three in particular for Applause;

For an era that was man handled and cut short, there is a good few gems to pick out (among some of her all-time worst).

for some reason i never play gaga at the bar. even when it's pop night and i've decided beforehand to play something by her. she just feels so uncool and i usually have zero issue with that. same goes for carly rae for some strange reason. i think the itunes album launch for artpop was the moment that made me really question her but as rb said in retrospect i'm glad she plays it differently and even though i scoff at her most of the time these days (her golden globes appearance and absolutely scandalous win, her frank sinatra tribute, etc) i still have a lot of goodwill for her and go back to a lot of her songs all the time.

Today's kitsch is tomorrow's antique.

Still on show for me are Sexx Dreams, Donatella and Applause - they just have a certain Gaga glaze I want spurted all over me with as little dignity as possible.

OMG Lou.

Thank God SOMEONE else loves Jewels n' Drugs - truly a mammoth banger.

YES! :disco:

RB has helped me realise Madonna is just a basic bitch in the vein of KP and Taylor Swift. Gags is something else ALTOGETHER :disco:

My ARTPOP could mean ANYTHING :disco:

I am out and proud about Gags personally. "You're the one with the problem; why don't you just deal with it?"

Watching "Venus" live on her Artpop tour with her just ridiculously bounding around the stage and those CRAZY SHIT FLOWERS growing out of the stage was one of the most BIZARRE yet :disco: moments of my ENTIRE LIFE

WHAT AN ALBUM THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN!

Madonna was considered forward thinking and creative in a time of MUCH less scrutiny of our popstars. She's obviously amazing, but she's not actually that personally creative.

I think there's a very thin line between creativity and self indulgence. Madonna's awareness of her own limitations and willingness to work with others to bring out the best in her own talents and theirs are why she had the career she had and Gaga imploded so quickly IMO.

Finally some common sense and realism in here!

Also, how many amazingly creative and interesting ideas has Gaga had, REALLY?

She was a total breath of fresh air in 2009, but ever since Born This Way it just seems to me that she's been recycling the same ideas - both musically and visually - just with much less focus and with increasingly diminishing returns.

Judaa-la-la-la :eyes:
