Supermarket Chat 2023

it's something I told my parents over christmas as well when I looked in their fridge and saw random tubs of APPLE SLICES and GRAPES. i mean fuck me.

Where do you stand on bagged salads?

I don't do pre-prepped fruit, but I can't imagine life without bagged salad leaves.

I know the supermarkets used to sell grapes by weight but I can't remember seeing them in Sainsbury's for a long time.

I've not seen an old school greengrocers for YEARS. I bet there are many in MUCH NICER TOWNS AND CITIES.

I don't think there's a butchers here either. Both absences are fucking lousy.

We do have a FRUIT AND VEG stand at the market which we use occasionally. Normally very cheap and enormous produce.

We've got one of those £1 a bowl fruit and veg stalls, but the quality is always hit and miss.

We have an independent organic fruit and veg store just across the road. I went in there once and they were horrendously rude so never went back. Our local butchers actually only opened a few years ago though and they’re lovely.

I go past one some days on the way home and occasionally pick something up. Often fine for making soup, or I just drop the dodgy stuff along the river for the squirrels on the way home.

My nearest supermarket since moving is a Co-Op and the prices are honestly fucking DISGUSTING. The other day I saw a 4-pack of kitchen roll for over £9 :manson:

WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH THEM!

The shelves are always HALF EMPTY as well.

Our Co-op is fine for shelves. But I don't remember the last time I went that at least two fridges or freezers weren't out of action.

Our Waitrose has a plastic thing of watermelon cubes for SEVEN WHOLE POUNDS.

I mean, who the fuck is that desperate to not use a knife?

buying pre-cut fruit in a plastic tub is hideous for the environment. there are so many fruits in plastic that don't need to be and certainly not FRUIT. buy some unpacked fruit and cut it yourself!
Have you tried to cut a mango? It ends up a soggy mess. It’s about the only thing I DO by pre-prepared.

Anyway come back to me when you’ve been more or more less vegan for the past fifteen years.

We’ve been buying more and more from
M&S and everything is so fucking delicious. I’ve just had some spanish tortilla that shits all over sainsburys version

Thanks for that. I've just been to Lidl and spent every minute wishing it was M&S food hall :(

Although I'm currently in Costa in King's Chase shipping centre, and @Penelope will tell you life doesn't get more glamorous than this.

Ha soz. I know I cant shop there all the time but its making it hard. At least I don’t pass Booths any more.

I have a bit of a gripe about M&S. They do it more than most other supermarkets too. It’s when they significantly reduce their ranges in something or decide to temporarily discontinue something to make way for seasonal stuff that’s not even of equivalent value.

They used to have a lovely lot of Miso noodle and rice dishes which were great for lunch in the office from a pretty good Asian range. Then they just discontinued it all last Summer to make way for barbecue deals that weren’t appropriate for on-the-go grabs at all. They’ve also just done away ALL of their nice range of crisps to make room for displays of overpriced Valentines chocolate gift sets.

A gripe of mine for pretty much all supermarkets which have a 'meal for two for a tenner' (or £300 or whatever it is now) is that the non alcoholic drink options are always SHIT. M&S are possibly worst because they frequently have wines which retail for £9 a bottle in them, and they do a lovely range of non alcoholic drinks, but it seems like it's only elderflower fucking presse in the offer.

The Sainsbury's near me has turned the self-service area into a LITTLE PEN with an alarmed gate that you need to scan a receipt to get through. But what if I don't WANT a receipt? Fuck the TREES, right?

For vegan ranges Asda is the worst.

Asda have a better selection of sweets

Asda in a nutshell then

There's something unquestionably gross about Asda - I think that horrid green everywhere doesn't help, but it's just shit and reminds me of a larger Iceland, except even Iceland in their smaller stores seem to have a better range. Asda is truly the last resort. Well, after Co-op probably.

No mention of Morrisons then - also shit. And actually stupidly expensive for what it is. Again really limited and pricier than Asda so possibly even worse. I'm not sure what their gimmick is anymore. PIES?

I'm fine with Tesco - some of it's in line with Aldi prices and there's more choice so we can do everything at once. The clubcard discount is made up nonsense of course, but I'm at least glad to get the points which we either use at Christmas or (as we'll be doing this year) converting them into ferry or channel tunnel tickets.

I love Aldi but I still think there's not that much choice and it pisses me off you can rarely buy fruit or veg not wrapped in pointless plastic. Also the tills are very stressful, and always busy and in deathly silence, to the point I always panic and never quite know what to DO when it's my turn :D:manson:

Waitrose and M&S are for occasional treats, but they do have some basics in line with the rest but probably better quality so I always like a quick look.

Asda is absolute trash. They know their market and they stick to it. It's more about range and image rather than cost these days, in a world with Aldi and Lidl outpricing everyone.

I'm an Aldi till pro. Don't fill up you trolley at the till, that's what the benches are for. This isn't Tesco. Monsters.

Co-Op QUITE RIGHTLY BOTTOM of the list. Although NO WAITROSE?

I mean it's nice to see Morrisons in the relegation zone and Asda hovering there, but what group of people exactly did they ask for this? :D I think everyone can agree M&S is all very nice, but as if the nation is flocking there with their trolleys especially in a cost of living crisis! Popping in for a sandwich is not the same as filling up the fridge is it.

Book of stats time. Supermarkets with most likes from my friends on FB

36 Aldi
36 M&S
32 Tesco
27 Sainsburys
20 Asda
15 Waitrose
14 Lidl
7 Morrisons

WHY EVEN BOTHER WITH ASDA?

:D at Waitrose saying fuck it and sailing over £110 with ease.

And proof that Morrisons is truly surplus to requirements. Terrible and presumably the first of the big ones to go. Well it should be. Send it back up north, you can keep it.

Not really a fan, but Sainsbury's have been quite savvy with the Argos thing and presumably being propped up by their Sainsbury Local stores.
