Old TOTP (BBC4) (2 Viewers)

The Branigan cover of The Power of Love is just a bit on the rough side. Didn't deserve to be a bigger 'hit' than the Rush version at all. The internet informs me that Rush's label held back on releasing it in the US as it was 'too European' so maybe they didn't give it a proper push when they did put it out.

Surely the King run must be nearly at an end. The doc at the start of the 1985 run promised they were a one album wonder. It feels like we've had too many ropey singles, and they unfortunately always seem to make themselves available for TOTP.

I owned that Red Box record. 12" double pack with the superior but by then deleted "Saskatchewan". I also liked the line of drummers. I always had a thing about drummers.

I was mighty fond of Lloyd Cole at the time too..I had the album this came from but I never thought too much of this particular song. Sounds awfully forced. Turns out it was. "Lost Weekend" and "Cut Me Down" are both better.

Depeche Mode look awkwardly stitched together on this one...not the best song, peroxide blonde Fletch, Gore pretty much in drag and Alan Wilder denied lighting...

Legit hard to believe you liked Red Box at the time. It is catchy mind...

But then I owned two Rednex singles.

Christ, The Style Council were utter shit from beginning to end. As limp and as useful as a pensioner's dick.

Lloyd Cole was one of those CRITICAL DARLINGS who was always going to be the NEXT BIG THING but never HAPPENED. 'Lost Weekend' was as GOOD AS IT GOT

HOW did the Style Council KEEP ON having hits?!

Diminishing returns from The Jam's fanbase. That one was in at 17 but a couple of years previously, they were going straight Top 5 and, the same before that, The Jam were going straight to No. 1.

I didn't HATE the Style Council but I didn't LOVE them either. But I could have done without DEE C LEE

They could at least have let poor Colonel Abrams go for a shit before the performance. He looks like he hasn't had a dump for a fortnight.

We're trundling towards Christmas now. I look forward to and equally fear the SLURRY of novelty hits.

I have already queried this. He's barely even on local radio now.

I'm more disturbed by the fact that I don't remember him at all and I listened to a LOT of radio in the mid 80's.

Consider, if you will, that Iron Maiden could get a live single into the top 20 on fan power.

"It's their first television debut". I think I'm seeing why this Paul Jordan chap disappeared so fast.

While I was aware See the Day was a cover I don't think I realised it was her from being a backing singer.

Well Doug E Fresh has just launched the late 1980s.

Is that the theme for Inspector Gadget?

SIX MINUTES
SIX MINUTES
SIX MINUTES DOUG E FRESH YOU'RE ON

I can't listen to that without giggling about my mate STU the MOST UNLIKELY BREAKDANCER OF ALL TIME :D

I have Doug E Fresh moments whenever I'm on a tube or a bus platform and the display says '6 mins'. I doubt I'll ever grow out of it now.

I warmed a little to Paul Jordan on his second go. Seemed like he was having a lovely time with Janice and his scarf.

I like See The Day but Dee C wasn't exactly a thrilling stage presence.

I had no idea that Jimmy Somerville was replaced by Ian Lavender channelling Julian Assange.

We seem to be missing the edition from Thursday 5 December 1985 as it is co-hosted by Mike Smith...

Whitters on her way to the top, Band Aid making a re-entry and Madonna heading towards her eighth top 10 hit of the year.
