Not only does it have a touching lyric which revealed a vulnerability and humanity that Marge doesn't often show, it is backed with a gorgeous tune which is perfectly served by Orbit's ethereal production.

like I said it works well for the album when looked at as a whole but as a stand alone track I would be fine never having to hear it again

Dull dull dull, much like Coldplay's Parachutes in that sense. Edit - to be fair the title track isn't too bad.

Her best album and therefore the best pop album ever. Possibly. Though the production (annoying gimmicky Orbit bleeps, less timeless), instrumentation and lyrics aren't as good as Prayer, the melodies are just as good and the high points are higher, even if it isn't as consistent (sags in the middle).

It's also just as cohesive, and LAP has weedier vocals. Even the low points (Shanti) aren't totally meritless, and despite being a bit too long and suffering the usual Madonna problem of overlong song times (Sky Fits Heaven), it's her finest achievement.

CFOAD and ROL are the only Madge albums where every single was a delight.
The album itself slipped a tad near the end. To Have And Not To Hold was dull, Little Star ridiculously cheesy, and Mer Girl dragged on too long.
But everything before...MAGIC. Sky Fits Heaven is under-rated.

Love it. Drowned World is a real grower, especially when it builds up after the second chorus. The other four singles are fucking fantastic, all four in my Madge top 20. Swim, Skin, Sky Fits Heaven and To Have And Not To Hold are also brilliant. The other tracks aren't much to me, but the whole feel of the album and the 9 highlights really make it a brilliant pop album.

Not sure why I gave this a SIX but it's an easy nine. I agree it works better as a whole than some of the individual tracks but you can't dispute that DWSFL is one of the best all-time album openers there is. "The Power of Goodbye" has also massively grown on me over the years evidently.

Drowned World and Frozen keep swapping places, but both are in my top 2 Madonna songs ever, and therefore probably also in my top 10 best songs to ever be recorded.
