The Celebration Tour 2023 (Greatest Hits) (1 Viewer)

Someone on PJ incorrectly thought that Alesha Dixon joined Madge for Vogue's scorecards and now I just want nothing more. Too bad Ruth Langsford was too busy going through Eamonn's texts. It really does have potential for some easy press hype for the event (not that it needs it, but celebs making cameos this way would be quite The Thing).

In what way? Disinterested? I’ve been avoiding clips and pics.

Just all standing there with their phones outstretched. Madonna concerts I've been to were BOUNCING. I don't understand the mentality of spending the entire time recording something to watch back on YouTube when you've paid HUNDREDS to be there in person. Nothing replicates being there live. Maybe capture a few seconds of your favourite song as a timestamp or something, but other than that I don't understand it at all. I thought filming at concerts would be a fad that would go away when people realised it's a waste of time.

Yes I noticed all the phones up on the clips I have seen, I am sure Madonna looks over at one point to the people up close in DISDAIN. She BANNED all phones from Madame X didn't she

Of all the clips I’ve seen so far, the audiences have been terrible. Nothing like any Madonna concert I’ve been to.
🤔 really? When we went on Tuesday I thought the audience were amazing. Although, I am comparing it to the worst audience I've ever seen at any concert, Queen at the O2 a couple of years ago.

I always record things when I'm at a concert, but...my reason is a good one in my opinion.

Ever since I was a teenager going to concerts, I go, love it, then the next day almost get a complete mental block and can't remember anything about the night.

So I started recording bits so I could go back and remember the night.

This tour is blowing my mind. I'll admit I thought that because she was so averse to doing a greatest hits type of show for her entire career, that she might not actually enjoy doing it. I mean everyone knew she would bring it from a production standpoint (she always does), but I wondered if she would feel somewhat uninspired actually performing it. Turns out it's exactly the opposite: Madonna hasn't looked this happy on tour since literally 1987. It's like she's discovering her own catalogue and realising, hey that's right I built that shit. There's a joy and sense of peace there, she's smiling and having a fucking BLAST with her dancers... and quite a different performing style, less perfectionist machine with something to prove, and more just... confidently the biggest pop star in history and having fun with it. FABULOUS to see.

And she looks astonishing.

I've not been able to stop thinking about the shows to be honest. First time a Madonna show has stayed with me like that for a long time - and don't get me wrong I have loved all her tours to date (yes, including Madame X). There's something quite special about this tour.
I think I might need to a book a 5th and final show :shy:

Totally agree with @Padam S, it's her best show since Confessions. She kept us waiting on both nights in Antwerp, we were standing on the first night and had good seats on the second night. I'll never get GA standing tickets again, it's just too exhausting these days to stand in a hot and stuffy arena for +5 hours, get pushed around and endure other peoples' BO. Having said that, it was amazing to see her up close at the long runway, she was smiling and seemed to be having fun.
The use of the screens is pure genius. So versatile.
Highlights:
Nothing Really Matters - brilliant opener
Holiday segueuing into In This Life and then Live to Tell gave me chills, the whole performance of LTT with the pictures of all the people that died from AIDS made me cry
Open your Heart was pure joy and looked phenomenal.
The bass line during Erotica and JML was insane
Bad Girl was just beautiful
Vogue was a lot of fun
Mother and Father!!! I was so happy to hear it and sing along, I love the dorky rap part
La Isla Bonita was such a crowd pleaser, pity it was so short
Die Another Day: The staging looks spectacular from above
Bitch I'm Madonna with all the Madonna doubles worked brilliantly

My only criticism: most of the songs are too truncated and don't have any breathing room. It felt a bit rushed at times.

I'm not over it yet either. I loved the vulnerable moments the best, like Mother and Father and Live to Tell. Plus seeing all the dancers with all the looks on at the end felt like completing a pilgrimage. I do agree with that Guardian piece about the narrative meandering towards the end but it didn't detract from the fun. She hosts such a good *party*

But fuck all was live. She was caught out no mic but vocals a number of times, including on the big ballads.

I don’t fucking care, but.

it sounds like she's singing this one

completely live with no backing track at all? which surprises me because it's not an easy song to sing range-wise and the vocal is actually quite brilliant. to see Mercy lipping along is beautiful.

Yeah, she ain’t singing that live. Or wasn’t tonight. I don’t think it sounds like it in that clip but I’ve literally got a video of her drinking from a glass whilst the first line rings out crystal clear and she starts lipping to exactly the same level of sound. :D

Only just realised she's in Stockholm tomorrow!

Tickets secured, MADONNA DOUBLE WHAMMY INCOMING! Managed to get golden circle on the other side this time, so a perfect "other side" view... :disco:

Also very tempted for a London "up the back so more of a full view" December ticket.
I did 2 London shows and I've honestly been thinking of nothing since.

I have Amsterdam coming up and (at the moment at least!) a fourth and final London show.

If the wheels don't fall off I am tempted to book a holiday for 2024 around one of the US shows..

Get over the Erotica section of this tour. The ridiculous beat, the orgy, the flashes of FEVER. :disco: I’ve gone back to watching all the YouTube videos on this. It’s phenomenal. So dark.

The recent EROTICA30 stuff has made me revisit the album more than any other lately, and I think the song itself is now in my all time Madonna top 5,

The whole show feels very #JUSTICE4EROTICA too, doesn’t it?

Has everyone been now? Do we drop spoilers by the way?

Totally agree. That entire sprawling central Erotica section is just magnificent. Stuart Price has also done a brilliant job with the music and doing that thunderous baseline justice in the arena. Visually it's also just magnificent - not only the staging but the lighting as well. I could go on! But yes I too have been watching clips online since the shows I've been to and I am honestly counting the days till my next one (Amsterdam).

I had an issue with the 'Crazy For You' bit and found it a bit jarring on night 1 but it made more sense on my 2nd show.

She's not coming here until April so I guess it's not going to be easy to avoid spoilers :D

I’m in Lisbon to see her tonight. Ended up in a restaurant near the venue last night so ended up hearing some of what is on the set anyway.

Security around the venue is ultra strict. We got told off for going up the steps to the entrance to take a pic beside a huge tour poster today.

After much solemn reflection I've concluded Bedtime Stories is her most underappreciated album and it has aged beautifully. So it was so good to have so much of it in the set, even if it slowed down the pace somewhat

I’ve returned to the UK from Lisbon and am bedridden with COVID, alas not because my wig was so violently snatched by (the excellent) Madonna.

My very general thoughts are it’s a great show and it felt pretty emotional at times just to see her up there and performing with such clear RELISH again. She took me on a whirlwind of memories from times associated with the eras.
The set list is stellar, of course anyone who has her entire discography could tweak it to their own tastes a little more but she has almost an impossible job on her hands to sift through that back catalogue.

I bought an overpriced Dita T-shirt, there was an outdoor merch stall at the venue both gig days all day & evening. The albums I seem to have returned to as a result of this show are ‘Madonna’ and ‘Erotica’.

Liking for the Madonna content, not the Covid (feel better soon!)
