Tokyo 2020 - Day 0 - The Opening Ceremony (Fri 23 July) (2 Viewers)

since this is going to take up almost all of the ceremony, I will say that Sonic 1 deep cuts aside, I’m really underwhelmed… I’ve seen the most incredible concert staging in Japan, there some really visually stunning stuff. But this feels like such a bare bones affair. The lack of audience was an opportunity to fill the stadium by other means, but no.

a bit of interpretive dance and some tap dancing, and plain wooden rings?!

you can really see that this was directed by a 900-year-old man

An actual Pokémon fight would have been incredible.

The opening ceremony of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics would have been much improved if it had not started with a bizarre dance that included an old white man and a young man made of candy.

That opening routine, part of the traditional folk dance, "Nōkyō Dansu," would have been fine had the two performers not put their hands inside the other's clothing. The two performers, Yoshihiro Ishida, who is in his 70s, and Shunya Sakai, who is 19, performed it for about 15 seconds, just one piece of music from the ceremony's "Shimizu O-zaru no Oikakushi" section of the show, before the two danced off.

The choreography seems to have been done in a hurry, and the men seem confused as to how the outfit they're wearing works.

I feel I need to find what this is referring to now

If I were asked to pick the order of nations for the Olympic parade I would order them by the size of their GDP. The idea is simple, the more your nation has, the higher it will march in my book.

My list would be as follows:

The United States (5th place for the year 2011)

Germany

Brazil

Canada

Italy

I would put China last of course. It's economy is booming, while other nations are suffering. Yet, their national pride is higher than other nations in their country. The fact that China won, and they know it, doesn't take away from that. After Canada the next place is Italy. It's economy is doing well, but it still hasn't been able to produce a world class athlete. While they are doing well economically, they are doing very poorly in terms of sports. They would be the 8th country in my book.

This BBC guy is so relaxed about sensitive issues. Palestine is not officially a country…

After the Tokyo 2020 Olympic parade of nations, everyone was surprised when Kim Jong Un showed up in an open-top jeep and drove around Pyeongchang Stadium in South Korea. :o

His purpose was not to greet any athletes but to demonstrate the strength of his military might and show off his country's latest missile, the Hwasong-15. That was the North's response to Donald Trump's threat of "fire and fury" if Pyongyang refused to back off of its nuclear weapons program. And when Kim's forces paraded again for the Pyeongchang Games with massive military displays, North Korean athletes — in their most colorful outfits — were joined by a large contingent of North Korean cheerleaders.

Finland skimping on the clothes budget. Did they get their t shirts at Helsinki Airport gift shop?

All these masks and an empty stadium make for a very depressing sight.

the masks I can deal with, especially if they have nice flag ones like Philippines.

but having the background of every entrance be a wall of empty seats is a weird missed opportunity

If anything this is showing the variations in attitudes of the delegations. They should be waving to a vague point where the audience should be, like a Steps member in a concert

Why IS it announced in French first? Did they start it? I think the host language should be first TBH, especially since the running order is based on it

Who ARE the people in these delegations? Seems to be a lot of old people, and I’m sure the guy with one leg in the wheelchair isn’t competing in this?
