The Netherlands 2024: Joost Klein - Europapa

I do think the key thing for this will be staging that distinguishes it as a genuine artistic heir to Käärijä and a cut above the Croatias and Finlands. I don't think it'll challenge but I could foresee a top 10 result if it pulls that off (and isn't harmed by the juries as a result).

Only because Finland will swallow up the televote though, otherwise I think it would do exceptionally well. Croatia maybe taking those votes too, but I don't consider that to be a "daft" entry in the first place.
Really? I don’t even see Finland as a sure qualifier. Croatia might have the “better” (for a wider audience) song, but I just don’t think he performs it convincingly at all.

The thing is this is the one that really probably does deserve to do the most well out of all the ones that will be perceived as novelties this year - it's a heartfelt message grounded in an actual pre-existing artistic hinterland, and forged by a torrid political climate and working as effectively as it can within the constraints on lyrics to take a stance in the midst of that context.

I declare this not the heir to Käärijä this year, but the heir to KONSTRAKTA for 2024 :disco:

Quite excited to learn EUROPAPA is also the name of a brand of FISTING GLOVES.

There's something about this entry that really grates on me despite its catchiness.

I think it's him

Joost is fantastic. Love his energy. I think it will do better than some people here might think.

Loved this - felt like experiencing for three minutes what Guy Verhofstadt doing everything in his power to try and persuade you to have sex must be like :disco:

The performance was great in my opinion (badly “sung” though). They just totally oversold it beforehand.

I think we finished top 3 yesterday but that starting position makes me think 6-10 will probably be the best result possible.

In better news: they are now using the gabber part in the recap.

I’ve walked past the arena and people are already queuing for the afternoon rehearsal so they surely got to say something SOON.

Seems like the threatening action was him waving a fist at a photographer who got too close after he expressed he didn't want to be filmed.

He also lunged at her. I get he was upset that he didn’t want to be filmed but the victim was an official EBU employee and was probably only doing her job. I have a feeling that the union got involved. They’d have been on the employee’s side and so they could have threatened that unless he was removed everyone would down tools and that would have meant no Eurovision at all.

It’s a stressful environment for everyone but yeah, you don’t fucking lunge at someone no matter what. If anyone did that at work they’d be sacked immediately.

SVT are reporting that the police have said the think the progress is good for a prosecution against Joost.

The Netherlands' Eurovision artist Joost Klein was reported for illegal threats on Thursday and was stopped from participating in the final.
The police have not yet handed over the case to the prosecutor.
- We expect to be able to do it at the beginning of June. Normally, we have a processing time of around six to eight weeks, says Emil Andersson, head of the investigative emergency in Malmö.
But in this case, we have used a legal process called accelerated prosecution.
According to Emil Andersson, they have used faster prosecution because they consider the evidence to be good in combination with the fact that it is not a more serious crime.
- The prognosis is good and we expect that there will probably be a prosecution, he says.

Agreed. Who cares who he is or how well his song may have done if he is an aggressive douche bag threatening a woman doing her job. Any other conclusion is obtuse.

It’s so muddled. You have ARVOTROS saying that they think the incident was not that serious, and then you have Swedish police saying they are confident of a prosecution. I just cannot believe that it would get this far if it was over a small thing that ARVOTROS are painting it to be.

And on another level the fact that the police feels it needs to do a public statement to pat itself (and the broadcaster) in the shoulder and comment/interfere/soft dictate on the likelihood of a prosecution is also quite problematic imo. Is there no separation of powers in place?
