Tennis 2023

It's kinda incredible because the media narrative last year was that Djokovic was Australia's most hated person but he had so much support.

That crowd were AWFUL but really pleased with the outcome there.

Not quite 2023 relevant, but I was looking up Jan Michael Gambill yesterday, just because I was wondering about all the super hot players I used to follow and what they’re up to now. Had no idea he was openly gay :o Him and Philippoussis were such typical bros on tour. I never would have guessed.

I mean, I saw those pictures of him topless on Elton John’s yacht with some Sean Cody models but I just couldn’t connect the dots.

I'm ready for Krejcikova to make massive inroads again this year. Her short burst in fall in Tallinn and Ostrava(!!!) was great and her Dubai title run this week was knockout.

BABS RISING :disco:

It was all about Murray for me this week. What a week even if he did fall at the final hurdle. I'm honestly surprised he's not ranked a little higher - I feel like he's had some really great results, but maybe not quite consistent enough.

Poor ignored Cam Norrie, 2 finals in 2 consecutive weeks against Alcaraz.

Ha I did watch him stumble over the line against an injured Alcaraz. All the things Alcaraz was doing - moving Cam around, drop shots, underarm serving, etc... were all the things Norrie should have been doing to Alcaraz who could barely move towards the end.

Shame for Murray to come up against fellow Brit (and most likely next male Brit Grand Slam winner) in the round of 32 at Indian Wells. I'd like to see Draper go far but have been enjoying Murray's scrappy wins this season.

we'd all kill to be Rod Laver.

outfit a bit of a slay honestly.

FAR worse.

With Emma cause and effect is much more apparent, with Bianca it almost seems to be a case of Delpo-glass-bones.

Shame that she'll be missing at least the next two slams, but once all this is dealt with, there will be no stopping her. I hope.

Great Britain are likely to have no woman in the top 100 for the first time since May 2008 this week

Jodie Burrage likely needs to make the semi finals or final of a 125k challenger to stop it

It feels so weird that Burrage will be British Number 1 soon. It wouldn't feel quite so weird if it were Dart, Boulter or Watson, just because they've all at least had reasonable peaks - but for Burrage to be British number 1 having never cracked the top 100 is strange.

We're there not sporadic periods before Heather, Laura Robson and Jo Konta where the British female number one wasn't in the top 100? I'm sure Anne Keothavong and Elena Baltacha were.

Yeah, from the mid 90s to early 00s it was pretty common. Sam Smith in her good Wimbledon year managed a top 100 finish but that was more of an exception than the rule. Anne K and Bally did have some number one outside of the top 100 year end finishes but at least both eventually made the top 50 after a long haul.

3 British women in a WTA Semi finals for the first time ever
Would be nice if this could carry on into Wimbledon. It was sad last year seeing the likes of Boulter and Heather especially, getting personal best Slam runs, and nothing for it in the rankings.

It is a bit concerning that Heather and Katie only seem to perform well on grass and are dire on other surfaces. It's too soon to comment on Jodie yet.

Words exchanged between Dart and Boulter at the end of their match. :eyes:

Great to see for the ladies at Nottingham. I'd also be surprised if Cornet doesn't win though. Still, the rankings jump from this and potentially Wimbledon should at least give them a chance for entry into the US Open and other WTA events. Watson and Boulter were done dirty with the lack of points at Wimbeldon last year.

New career high ranking and British number one status for the winner, as well.
