RPDR CAN S01E07: Miss Loose Jaw

Monique Heart in this week's Pit Stop was saying that there's a racial element to the reaction against JBC and that people resent black men in roles of power unconsciously. Which I don't know - perhaps there is something there.

I do very much agree with her point that the fandom is attacking him for doing something they do on a daily basis, in that we throw on a bit of eye shadow at most and feel that we can lay into a performer for the quality of their drag. I mean, it's a fair assessment.

I don’t think he’d have had the same backlash had he not been a cunt in the judging. Racism will always play a role but the reaction of disliking Jefferey has been universal.

This is such a good point. We have all said things so much worse than JBC ever has, but we didn't have a camera in our face when we did it.

I am a total JBC apologist. It is a TV show, and they are all finding their feet. I think it would benefit hugely from giving each judge a more defined role, rather than all job sharing, which is where I think a lot of this is coming from. Make Brooke the host, have Stacey do the Michelle detailed nitpicky critiques and JBC become the voice of the viewer, who doesn't NEED much drag knowledge because the viewers don't.

Call people out on their shit fine, but when what you are saying is FAR WORSE than what was said in the first place I have a real problem with it. Two wrongs absolutely do not make a right, which is why I struggle SO MUCH with ridiculous cancel culture.

Crystal from DRUK wrote this article which pretty much voices my thoughts perfectly on JBC -

And he is in quite a (relatively) crappy situation in that the show is recorded and done. I'm sure he'd love to adapt his presenting/performing style, but he can't do that in retrospect.

So essentially he's in a no win situation where he made a choice during filming, it hasn't translated well on screen, and people are screaming at him for it yet there's nothing he can do until next season.

I don’t think he’s said anything too bad, what annoys me is the exaggerated camp persona which seems totally unnatural, and isn’t something I recognise from when he appeared on the main show.

I don’t mind the campiness. In fact, I think it’s great to see a masculine, gay, mixed race man camping it up on international TV.

I also don’t think he’s been THAT harsh FFS. Hasn’t there always been a nasty judge on every reality show panel? Simon Cowell, Craig Revel Horwood, etc. Isn’t he just fulfilling that role? Lighten up, bitches.

I mean far be it from me to weigh in on any racial issues, but I honestly think most of the backlash has stemmed from the stark contrast with his RPDR appearances until now (and believable accounts of his niceness)

I agree with @Chlammy that this was a clear choice by JBC and/or production to have a mean judge, which is backfiring. They couldn’t have had Brooke being the main bitch because she doesn’t really have the solid position to do that. Stacey could have I suppose? JBC definitely seems to have the least working knowledge of the skills needed for Drag Race, it’s not like he’s a comedian for the acting side (especially going by that MCing of the pageant)

it was a choice that didn’t ultimately come over well or authentically. Hopefully he will get a chance to be himself in S2.

even watching the pit stop, they were talking with a mute clip behind it, his mannerisms in the workroom were so put-on, just makes me cringe!

It’s not what he’s saying that’s necessarily bad, it’s how he’s saying it. That little squinty eye thing he did after telling Jimbo to use his time better, for example, made me actively hate him. It wasn’t constructive, it was just outright dickish. If somebody pulled that shit on me there’s no way I’d ever give them time of day again.

A read that didn't land well is hardly a reason to hate him. No one should be surprised with reading and shade on drag race, and sometimes you'll miss the mark.

yeah exactly
I think a lot of these repeated misses are why we keep talking about it.

just a shame that it can’t just stop at that for the fan mobs

Knowing literally nothing about him prior to starting this series, things like that are all I have to go on for clues to his character. He comes across as an arrogant, affected and deeply unpleasant person - and this is AFTER being heavily edited.

Has anyone seen programmes he was in? The only one I think I remember is The New Normal but I haven’t watched it

I think a lot of it stems from the fact that his judging comments have been particularly harsh towards Jimbo (and often just plain strange, like telling him ‘you’ve finally arrived’ a week after winning Snatch Game) and Jimbo is a weirdo who many fans relate with. So it’s positioned as this handsome popular guy being mean towards the loveable misfit and I think that’s potentially quite triggering to some viewers.

Exactly this, which combined with harsh critique or even when he’s only supposed to be sassy, it comes off as really malicious/scornful.

Scornful is a good word to use. As I say, I don’t know who he is or what he’s ever done before, all I know of him is this and, as a casual viewer, he’s left a lousy impression.
That Stacy one comes across brilliantly, however.

I’ve only seen him as a guest judge on the regular show where he was delightful.
