It can't be ANYONE from the ISLINGTON SET. Not even SIR KEIR

I think Starmer has to be an instant bet, at least to stand. He's good in interview, for one thing and we know how much that counts in our environment.

Lord, I mean, what is a unifying figure even? Is it just another word for a centrist? I have to admit that I am torn. Can a leftist leader be elected in this country with all the odds and biases stacked against them? I don't know. Also, what makes us think that a centrist Labour leader wouldn't also have shit thrown at them - Gordon Brown did, so did Ed. This is an uphill battle.

And it's an uphill battle for so many reasons. I would love someone like Angela Rayner to lead the party, but my gut fear is that Britain's problem with class will be an impeding factor. Just as much as the Etonians believe they were born to rule, there are people in this country who have internalised the idea that only some posh cunt is fit/experienced/intelligent enough to lead the country. This country is such a fucking mess.

I said in the other thread that this election was a resounding failure for Corbyn-brand socialism. However, realistically the Momentum crowd aren't going to totally dissipate. The next leader will still have to answer to the active left wing of the party. That's potentially a good thing - it'll check the party from sliding too far to the right. But only if they elect somebody for whom the communist and antisemitism slurs won't stick.

Angela Rayner or Kier Starmer for me. I prefer Rayner as a personality, but I do fear the curse of women in power and referendums on their 'likability'. For similar reasons I feel Jess Phillips would be a disaster.

I've not had the radio or tv on this morning. What has Corbyn actually said - just that he won't lead into the next election?

Oh I really didn’t mean it like that :D I love Corbs’ snaggletooth.

I know :D

I just conjured up this idea of bizarre party leader requirements in my head.

1. Must have a clear stance on Brexit etc etc

2. Must have own set of own teeth(Those with high quality denchers or firmly fixed implants will be considered if they score highly in other criteria!)

Long-Bailey needs to be kept as far away from this race as possible. Preferably in a sealed container deep underground. Starmer or Rayner would be my picks. I don’t think Jess Phillips is leadership material, but I would like to see her take a more prominent role in the party. Her unwillingness to toe the party line, give a vague answer or adhere to parliamentary convention makes her one of the most relatable MPs full stop.

How likely is it that Emily will run? Surely she is much more competent than Long Bailey?

More competent but the last thing we need. She (much as it's deeply unfair) has the same sort of repellent vibe as Diane Abbott on a lot of voters, because she gets thought of as posh and hectoring and as someone who's looking down on them.

You're all smoking something strong if you think Angela Rayner has a SNOWBALL IN HELL chance of getting elected as Prime Minister. Do you even know the country you live in?!

I’m not sure it’d look particularly great if Keir got the job with a sea of female candidates on the ballot

It surely has to be a woman. The party of equality and all that is the only one not to have had a female leader

Jess Phillips who gleefully joins in on the media's haranguing of Diane Abbot but considers Jacob Rees-Mogg a pal is very much not the leader Labour needs if they want to keep the support of the young and diverse activist base that has been booming under Corbyn. We shouldn't throw the baby out with the bathwater, because those people were doing most of the legwork in this election.

Exactly.

But the biggest question here really is, can the British people bring themselves to elect a Prime Minister who not only comes from a working class background, but still sounds like it. That's the sticking point I see for a lot of the women being suggested as Labour leaders (before we even start thinking about whether Britain can stomach a POC like Dawn Foster or David Lammy or one day Sadiq Khan)

I think it does have to be a woman. Even though i'd say Keir is the most natural leader of the candidates. Personally i'd like to see Clive Lewis up there - he has a good manner and shows a lot of humility.

But again, should be a woman.

Not that I think she's the one, but the number of people calling Jess Phillips a Tory, a Blairite, claiming they'd leave the party if she won etc is depressing me.

Nothing has been learned.

They're literally NOT the party of equality. They're the party for the working class.

The Lib Dems are the party of equality.
