Ooh, interesting. As someone who does take the time to watch everything now, this is quite welcome. I know there are only a handful of those anonymous Oscar voter ballots published every year, but it does get annoying when someone quite proudly states they didn’t bother watching a nominated film. Especially the shorts which take a lot of effort to seek out, and yet they get a nice handy special link.

Oddly the Hollywood Reporter mentioned calling it now “The Diane Warren Rule”, because aside from acting, the names of the nominees are apparently not revealed on the voting sheet. That implied that Warren hasn’t won based on the voters apparently not knowing the songwriter, which is frankly horseshit for that particular category.
I think it’s a bit weird to demand that everyone watch all the nominated films for Best Original Song though (although I do).

The thing is, with 16 nominations, only the first 4 really stand out as significantly good and memorable. And only 2 of those 4 could have probably had a chance of winning
1987 - Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now lost to I’ve Had The Time of My Life
1996 - Because You Loved Me lost to You Must Love Me
1997 - How Do I Live lost to My Heart Will Go On
1998 - I Don’t Want To Miss a Thing lost to When You Believe
The other 12 noms? Mostly forgettable rubbish.

Having to watch the film seems like a good idea even for Best Song. It will reward songs that tie in to and enhance the film, rather than random pieces of music plonked on to the end credits.

Warren could justifiably have won for about a dozen songs in the 80s and 90s, but the songs she’s been nominated for this side of the millenium have invariably been utter shit.

I thought the branches just decided the nominations? Every member gets a vote in the final ballot.
What's more exciting is Best Casting in 2026 and Best Stunt Direction in 2028
They should also put the shorts into a pre-Oscars show like the Grammys do with their more obscure categories, and keep the main feast for the live telecast.

I have no idea. They don’t seem to understand how nominations are made. I keep just reading comments from people saying it got loads of nominations because voters hadn’t seen the other films? Made NO sense.
