Bit of a prelude to the main event, but some potentially important fights happening, and a Tory wipeout could turn the screws on Sunak.

Some key battles to watch

Blackpool South By-Election
A near certain Labour pickup following the disgrace of the hideous Scott Benton, but as ever the numbers will be worth watching.

Mayoral Elections in West Midlands & Tees Valley
Both prominent Tory mayors fighting to hold on. If at least one survives, Sunak can claim a minor victory. Both being defeated would be considered a disaster for the Tories.

Mayoral Election in North East
Incumbent Mayor Jamie Driscoll was controversially barred from running again as a Labour candidate, allegedly due to his connections with the Corbynite left. He's running as an independent. If he can beat Labour it'll be an embarassment for Starmer and may spark more independent challenges in left leaning seats going forwards.

Personally I'll be voting for OUR TRACE as Mayor of West Yorkshire, but for the Green candidate in my council ward.

I split my council vote, 1 Labour, 1 Green.

Labour for PCC
 
The Tories don't have much further to fall in our council elections, but I'm hoping for single digits, naturally.

24 Green
23 Labour
14 Conservative
5 Lib Dem
2 Knowle Community Party (ex Lib Dems who had a fallout with the local party)
2 Independent
 
Labour (mayor)
Lib Dem (assembly - constituency & London-wide)
 
Labour for Mayor (although i don't mind the Lib Dem, as RICH as she is)
Labour for PCC, whatever the fuck they do.
 
I've already voted Labour. Our councillor is our constituency candidate and I know her as head of my department at Uni.

The council is unlikely to budge here, it's split three ways and I doubt anything is going to shift.

This is the one I'm most interested in, I think. It's very close according to polling and, like you say, very embarrassing for Starmer and an inroad to his worst nightmare should Driscoll win - independents standing against the right wing of the party. I know a few people in the area and they've enthusiastic both about Driscoll AND about giving Starmer the metaphorical finger.

5 years ago, I'd have been narked at this. Today, the standard of candidate on offer makes it an entirely reasonable response.
 
Backing Andy 'CAZ' Burnham as Mayor of this fine metropolis. Not decided about my council vote, I'm on a big stag do comedown so might just write VOTE BIG RON on my paper.
 
I'll vote Sadiq Khan because I want motorists to SUFFER, and if I have anything else to vote for I guess I'll go green. I've done absolutely no research into who's running or for what.
 
My ward (Riverside & Hunslet) is currently 2 Labour, 1 Green.

We have one Labour councillor who is very active and engaged, and one who you never hear from and who made me laugh this time as he blatantly didn't even bother to write a quote for his own leaflets. The Green candidate came within a hundred or so votes of beating the good councillor last time, this time he's up against the invisible one, so I reckon he has a good chance.

Leeds as a whole is massively Labour dominated, though I reckon the Greens will continue to eat into their majority in the more leftie areas.

I was today years old when i learned our PCC is being canned and entirely taken over by the new Mayor.
 
I forgot there was a constituency assembly vote too. I dithered for a bit and then went Green because the Labour guy had a posh sounding name :eyes:
 
The really interesting one, to me, is the new North Yorkshire Mayoralty. It is apparently neck and neck and whilst the area does include York itselg (which trends Labour) the idea of Labour snatching this from the Tories in what is the very epitomy of their heartlands would be astonishing.

Conversely, I wouldn't be too surprised if Ben Houchen holds on in the Tees Valley - he may be a Tory but he is popular locally and has achieved quite a lot. It's unlikely but he might just withstand the tidal wave coming.

The Tory candidate has pretty much wiped any mention of Conservatives on all his campaign leaflets/adverts. Really goes to show.

I fear that outside of York/coastal Yorkshire the Tory vote will go Lib Dem (as it often does, e.g. Harrogate/York Outer) and the split will be enough to allow a Tory victory.
 
Probably Green. Probably the same or a spoiled paper for the GE as I'm sick of the choice between red or blue Tories.

The hot local topic is the town library which got closed "temporarily" for electrical rewiring after some contractor decided to condemn it. Plastered all over the leaflets from the local Labour candidate is a huge misrepresentation that the Green candidate was the only one to vote against it being reopened. What actually happened is they said it was safe with no evidence at all and motioned that it should be reopened immediately, and she voted against immediate reopening until someone could prove that it's safe (rather than rush it back open with potentially an electrical fault). Perfectly valid stance and very dirty game playing from Labour.

Yes, I think that is key, if York Outer, Harrogate tilt LDs (which they almost certainly will) but also areas like Ryedale and Richmondshire do also, there may just be enough to see the Tories through.

I would love Labour to grab it - it would be an utter earthquake and one the national press should pay close attention to.

Other as in not voting 😅 I registered at home but stuck at uni; my younger sister's voting first time. Probably Labour or Green if I were to vote :thumbsup: 🗳
