Nelly Furtado - Whoa, Nelly! (sync listen tonight 8pm)

10 My Love Grows Deeper, Part I

Truly fucking gorgeous. The perfunctory opening just gives way to the most wonderful cascade of melody after melody. This song is my happy place, and I love the electronic edge.

10 I WILL Make You Cry

When we enter the Portuguese section of the album I become VERY happy.

The playfulness of the verses here really tickles. I love somebody having fun with their lyrics, this is smart songwriting folkses

11 Scared of You

OMG the amount of times I wallowed in misery listening to this song. When I thought my life was going to be miserable. When the bullies ground me down. When I fell in love with a Portuguese boy and he broke my heart and this was the only way I could connect with all we had been through.

"I know you'll shrine much brighter than I ever could."

Welling up now.

Sorry, I got distracted by a video of the backing Pussycat Dolls performing Santa Baby on terrible green screen :(

It's a really varied album - I like that she mixed it up with vocals, production etc throughout. I don't know who produced the album but she should hit them up if she ever decides to return from hiding.

OMG I forgot the bit where she ACTUALLY pretends to cry while warning you that you're gonna cry, you lil' bitch. :horny:

Just got to this bit :D

The producers were from The Philosopher Kings, this Canadian pop-RnB group. I think there was an interesting interview with them recently for a retrospective on the album that I'll try to find.

I'd gag if she went back to them.

OK, so I clearly still love this album. I really feel that it holds up today. Great production, fabulous, clever songwriting. It's ear candy.

For Miss @RJN, I would say my faves are Turn Off The Light, Party and Scared of You. Shout outs for My Love Grows Deeper and I Will Make You Cry and Shit on the Radio.

I never thought I’d say this, but thank Allah for Bev for saving this album from the embarrassingly low rates it got in the beginning.

There you go:

08 Hey, Man!
07 Shit on the Radio (Remember the Days)
02 Baby Girl
10 Legend
10 I'm Like a Bird
10 Turn off the Light
05 Tryna Finda Way
10 Party
06 Well, Well
10 My Love Grows Deeper, Part 1
03 I Will Make U Cry
11 Scared of You
10 Onde Estas
08 My Love Grows Deeper, Part 2

This was the album I listened to the most during my Erasmus year in Paris in 2001-2002. Nelly reminded me of a lot of my Italian and Spanish borderline lesbian co-students there.

I don’t think I’ve listened to any of these songs (except I’m Like a Bird) for about a decade.

I agree that Turn off the Light is probably her best single.

I've listened to Well, Well about 5 more times but that seems to be only my favorite :D

My favorite song of hers is, and will probably always be, Try. It is just too beautiful.

All of the moments that already passed
We'll try to go back and make them last
All of the things we want each other to be
We never will be
And that's wonderful, and that's life

If you find the album interesting and play it enough, you'll find it beds in quite easily. I don't think anyone has done an album that is sonically, melodically and lyrically as interesting as Nelly did with this album.

I love so much more of her work, but this is her creative opus, I feel.

I'll definitely give it all another listen. Especially given how passionately you and others seem to feel about it

Yes, a thousand times yes. Especially the radio edit that beefs up the outro.

This album has massive nostalgia for me. I think it might be one of the first albums I listened to all the way through as a wee 9/10 year old.

I've been listening to these recently - only one I knew before was I'm Like A Bird of course 😊🐦
Turn Off The Light is rather catchy, I like that kind of narration too. 💡🌕

My favourite non-singles are Well, Well and Scared of You. I like the beat, chorus and the little "fly like a bird" bit of Well, Well. 🪽🎵
I kind of explained for Scared of You here, her singing towards the end is especially beautiful. 🎼💕🪄
I quite like those long 6 minute or so songs. :D 🕰♡

Only just listened to My Love Grows Deeper Pt 2 and Onde Estas :disco: that 2nd part seems better, and that's a beautiful song in Portuguese about the stars and the waves... 🌌🌊

I wasn't born when this was released... I'm slightly older than her daughter, and around the age when Nelly Furtado released this. I wouldn't keep up with the dancing and work ethic 😅 but could probably do those softer choral vocals. ☺️ 🎶

True 📴 💡🎶🪄🌕 the follow me follow me follow me bit in the chorus is fun
I like the 'underground' music video too:

💐😊
