Was interest so low that we didn't even have a thread this year? :o

Anyway this lot won. They went to Leeds Conservatoire, which is nice. They can now brag about having spawned a Mercury Prize winning band and a Czech Eurovision entry, both equally prestigious accomplishments. :disco:

Full list of nominees:

Barry Can't Swim: ‘When Will We Land?’
BERWYN: ‘Who Am I’
Beth Gibbons: ‘Lives Outgrown’
Cat Burns: ‘early twenties’
Charli xcx: ‘BRAT’
CMAT: ‘Crazymad, for Me’
Corinne Bailey Rae: ‘Black Rainbows’
corto.alto: ‘Bad with Names’
English Teacher: ‘This Could Be Texas’
Ghetts: ‘On Purpose, With Purpose’
Nia Archives: ‘Silence Is Loud’
The Last Dinner Party: ‘Prelude to Ecstasy’

I was basically "anyone except The Last Dinner Party" this year. I knew Charli wouldn't get it but it was a good, solid, credible list.

I like that the Mercury has now settled into what it wanted to be - a Booker Prize for music. They tried too hard to be "relevant" for a bit and now it's what it should have been all along - a bit of mid-profile fun for the heads.

I get that it's about the award and not the show, but the show was dire this year. Usually love watching it.

Yeah, there was no live element to the show this year. Hadn't heard about the sponsorship aspect but it would make sense.

I mean, Mercury were the original sponsor, they went bust a few years later and the prize kept the name. Perrier AGOG.

They aren’t all pretentious song titles. ‘Sideboob’ sounds like a restrained Kim Petras song.

They lost their main sponsor didn’t they?

Yeah, and apparently the other offers 'didn't fit'. I'm very surprised they couldn't put on something a little more than what they did though by selling tickets/tables etc. A few live performances wouldn't go a miss at a music awards show.

I've tried three times to understand that album cover and I can't. So I don't hold out too much hope for the music.

I quite like this one but overall they're just OKAY. Very un-Moopy obviously.

What did the awards show consist of with no performances and one award? Was it 10 minutes long?
They showed previous BBC performances by all the nominees...that's what I read, I didn't watch it.

Personally I'd have given it to Nia Archives or The Last Dinner Party
Nia Archives stuff is so fast it gives me anxiety. The Last Dinner Party are terrible and I look forward to them fucking off when their second album sells fuck all.

(Cut to Moopy 2026 when TLDP are at #1 for the 8th week....)

Haha, I will support fast and hard music till I die. She was ace at Glastonbury.

Are all of Cat Burns' songs as terminally BORING as that one hit she had?

It's like her label were aiming for a female Ed Sheeran and landed on a female JAMIE LAWSON.

Favourites for me are the criminally underrated CMAT or Charli... I quite like Last Dinner Party too 😳
CMAT had a LOT of online support for the award. I think I like her as a personality but I'm not wild on her music.

I don’t like that big single at all but the other stuff isn’t bad, more typical R&B with a singer songwriter slant. But it’s just kinda there. It didn’t do much for me.
