Making a separate thread because I don't like my beloved Final Fantasy Lounge being the depository for FFXVI news :tongueout: There was a panel at the PAX East convention yesterday, and we got this trailer showing off a bit more of the game's world:

It really is extremely beautiful!

I haven't watched the full panel yet, but here it is:

There's another event next month where they're planning to go into the RPG elements of the game in more detail.

I'm watching this now, it's pretty interesting! The way they're making it customisable for people who may not be so good at action games is a decent compromise - accessories that (for example) briefly slow down time and bring up a timing prompt so you can dodge when you're about to be hit, or let you perform combos easier, and you can equip different combinations of them so you can find something that works for you.

It's looking a little Witcher-esque :disco:

Which is a development that I still find saddening. FF used to have an element of whimsy, charm, a certain je ne sais quoi but each of the more recent iterations is starting to look a little more like other franchises.

Technically and graphically it looks impressive but is this one finally going to have bit more soul to it? I'm unsure.

I agree. Everything beyond FF9 lacked the warmth and playfulness that made the franchise iconic. FF12 was kinda close, but they all became too serious and...adult?

So at this point, I'll gladly welcome something that resembles the Witcher. If they're gonna draw inspiration from a franchise, that's a solid choice.

I think 10 also got the balance right, 10-2 was CAMP of course 12 had some moments with an overall the weaker story but the more intriguing game mechanisms and side quests.

I still feel the wheels kinda fell off with the 13 series - even if the signs were there before.

And I'm definitely nervous about XVI. They need to revamp their storyboarding because the plots are becoming so poor. Luckily, there's a wealth of games with great stories these days, but it's sad seeing FF just kinda...drifting.

Also, how rubbish was FF15? I've never felt the need to play it again. No personality, no lore, just a generic RPG

I do wonder if the older games feeling lighter/goofier is partly down to them being limited by the technology of the time. If they hadn't had to use cutesy sprites to tell their stories, maybe they'd have gone down the dark fantasy route more regularly back then?

It's the worldbuilding for me. 7 and 8's worlds were much more developed than 15. There was lore to explore and there was more connectivity. Regardless of the nostalgia

It certainly didn't help that XV's story was spread across movies and anime and had stuff held back for the DLC episodes :D I think they've said everything for XVI will be contained within the game itself, thank goodness.

I missed the presentation tonight, but wow at this :disco:

I've been listening to his STRAY SHEEP album quite a bit recently, he's fantastic.

I don't think I can touch this until I've finished Zelda, but I'm glad it's nearly here.

They played that trailer when I went to the Prince Charles cinema the other day to watch a 4K version of Thelma & Louise of ALL THINGS.

There was a MUTED RESPONSE. The FF vibe for me is VERY OFF.

I played half an hour during my lunch break and the vibe was perfect. I am desperate to finish work to get on with the rest of the demo.

I'll give the demo a go later, I hope they've got it right this time.

Was it XV that had the Carbuncle demo? That was almost as big a mess as the game itself, bearing little resemblance to the final game. I'm still shocked at what Square did in releasing that, with massive sections missing and so on. I had a good time playing it in the end though, whizzing around in my bright orange car had a certain charm that didn't get old.

My understanding it is the first 2-3 hours of the game, and your save carries over to the proper game. Then a combat demo with more skills once you finish the story section of the demo.

I remember the carbuncle bit for the XV demo, but not the car?

Ok, I've finished the story part of the demo.

First off, I recommend everyone used to things like God of War, Dark Souls etc to switch to controller style 2, which puts the attacks on R1 and R2 and instantly made combat flow better for me.

Anyway, definitely seems to be the darkest FF, but I'm very excited about where the story goes from here.

The EVIL MOTHER is already Eikoniqué

I'm dreading desperate for the Murdoch and Tyler fan art.

Very Game of Thronesy plot I thought, especially killing pretty much everyone off, and violently too. I even almost felt bad for Joshua, but his voice was so annoying that Ifrit was doing us all a mercy.

I really do hope the mother is the final boss of the game as some sort of dominant (praying for Anima :disco:).

I'm confused how Clive knew what was going on. I think it wants you to assume that he is Ifrit, but I'm not 100% convinced that's what will end up being the case.

The game looks stunning and the combat system seems quite fun. After dinner I'll do the combat part of the demo and really test it out.

Very early doors, obviously, but might be the best mainline (and offline) FF for me since 10 if it lives up to that start.

Having said that, if Torgal dies I'll be declaring it the WORST FF EVER

Shocker that the FF and Thelma and Louise crowds don’t intersect.

Finished the Combo demo. Its a bit fiddly switching between movesets but by the end I was kind of getting used to it. I could definitely see myself enjoying a hard mode playthrough once I'm used to it properly

I’ll give the demo a go but I’m just not excited. I’m also on holiday for three weeks in two weeks time so I definitely don’t have time for it (yet) and with FFVIIRebirth on the horizon I’m happy to hold off.

I've now ordered it but I think I'll still hold off on the demo, I want to go in knowing as little as possible.
