But yes, the moment he decides not to nakedly appeal to the prevailing trends (he’s a trend chaser, not a setter after all) then he may become undone. There’s no way he would have made that last album if ‘After Hours’ didn’t exist. Let’s hope he goes completely off the boil and puts out an ‘Endlessly’ (or an ‘Elbow Beach’ )

He's more or less a reductive pop artist at this point and it's fine so long as what he's aping is fine (Shape of You redoing Cheap Thrills, the last few singles redoing The Weeknd). He does, fair play, seem to largely give credit where it's due, and the guy suing him was seriously blatantly chancing his arm.

All in all I'm not quite sure what I think of where the industry is at in terms of credits now post the Marvin Gaye estate Blurred Lines case. A part of me thinks it's ridiculous Good 4 U put Paramore on the songwriting credits, but another part of me thinks...I guess it's nice to pay it back if something was obviously an inspiration even if you aren't even directly using anything from it?
