I'll never see Star Trek technobabble about "omicron particles" the same way again...

Omicron Theta was the planet where Data was created by Dr Noonian Soong and then the crystalline entity destroyed it after Lore called it there. There have been lots of Omicron Star Trek references mentioned in our house since the name was announced. :shy:

The fucking BBC leading with THIRD OMICRON FOUND IN U.K. in the headlines :manson:

Hun, there’s clearly already hundreds of cases and there’s no evidence that it’s dangerous. Stop acting like people are finding Willy Wonka’s hidden golden tickets

That’s a good point, but almost every country where a variant has been first discovered has been treated in a similarly unfair fashion. The UK itself probably bore the most of this type of treatment simply because (as SA has correctly noted about itself) its scientists do so much sequencing of the virus. If you’re a country which either doesn’t bother or doesn’t have the necessary industry, you’re probably not going to be the first detecting many variants.

Yeah my first thought when I read that was, Kent knows how you feel.

But you’d think that that wouldn’t need explaining to people. We all now know how viruses spread.

Nowadays there isn't any difference phonetically, but in ancient times people were stressing them differently. Their names being o micron (small o) and o mega (big o) are self explanatory of the original pronunciation. But grammatically and for the words to make sense both are used as originally meant in written.

Yeah I called it right away that it'd already be here - I'm actually leaning towards South Africa's views on being "punished" for actually checking for variants. Which I know flies in the face of previous comments I've made earlier like "bah we should've closed the borders earlier and now we've had planes packed full of Indians coming over here spreading Delta" - not quite worded like that but in hindsight I can't help thinking this is how xenophobia and racism creep in and how easy it is to get caught up in it ourselves even as normally 'woke' kind of people. It's fear that does it. But surely if the pandemic has taught us anything by now it's that everything inevitably finds its way around the world, it's only a matter of time in such an interconnected world, and at best closing the borders slows it down ever so slightly. But since the R0 of covid is so high it just takes one case to somehow reach the country and it spreads like wildfire, it happened with Delta and I'm sure the same will happen with Omicron so I don't know if there's much point to dividing ourselves further. We need to have a united effort at facing the crisis and jab the world. This thing of "we're alright, we've got lots of vaccine, just shut off other countries" will keep coming back to bite us with nasty new variants popping up in less-vaccinated countries until eventually the lesson is learned.

My god this is superior knowledge, can't wait to bust this fact out and act SMUG.

Anyway, it does appear that the omicron variant presents milder symptoms, especially in the vaccinated, so it could actually be a good thing that its more dominant and more virulent. Early days, but I'm ever the optimist, especially after reading that vaccination + delta infection = INVINCIBLE.

Ooh should be able to get mine then.

I always wonder though whether shortening the time makes it less effective but either way DESPERATE TIMES and all that.

back to masks today on public transport and in shops. and deep state employees - that's me - need to be able to show a valid corona passport at work

as long as it keeps us out of lockdown!

I'd say we had a touch more people wearing masks today at work, but mostly the young seem to think they're exempt. Oh and those with a full face of make up who don't want it spoilt by a mask.

Presumably still only over-40s are able to book and they’ll work their way down the age groups again. This was just the approval rather than the invitation.
